The top 7 essential beauty supplements

Oh winter. That naughty frosty season where we crave lashings of stodgy warm food, copious amounts of hot mulled wine, festive party shenanigans and ludicrously high central heating temperatures.

Sadly, as fun as they are, all of the above can play havoc with our skin, leaving it dehydrated, dull and riddled with blemishes.

Whilst a fabulous cleansing, exfoliating and moisturising routine is essential, nourishing your skin from within is probably the best way to obtain your dream complexion.

After years of working as a Beauty Editor and trying a ridiculous number of skin-perfecting supplements, I’ve decided to share with you my essential top six products for a perfectly plumped, glowing and spot-free face.

1. Skin Accumax, Advanced Nutrition Programme

This ultimate godsend of a product changed my life. No joke. I had recently come off a scary type of birth control pill used to suppress my acne for years and was left with a horrifically pimpled face, particularly around my jawline area – a tell tale sign of hormonal adult acne. This greatly affected my confidence until I randomly discovered Skin Accumax, which completely cleared my skin after four months of taking four tablets a day. I even wore a blog post about it and bared my before and after photos to the whole of the internets. These magic white nuggets of goodness contain vitamin A and a spot-busting natural ingredient derived from broccoli called DIM. I don’t know how they worked, they just did, and now I can smugly skip about foundation-free with a flawless fresh face.

2. Mikei Red Reishi Mushroom

This wonder supplement (£39.99 for 30 capsules) is adored by gorgeous faced celebs such as Kim Kardashian and Gwyneth Paltrow for its noticeable anti-ageing qualities. For decades, the red reishi mushroom has been used to boost immune systems, help minimise fine lines, balance energy levels and even aid weight loss. After taking this oriental beauty supplement for a month, I could see the fine lines on my forehead fade away slightly and noticed an improvement in my concentration levels. When taken on a long term daily basis, this 100% natural product is said to help prevent ageing.

3. Collagen Hyaluronic Acid Complex, Solgar

Renowned supplement company Solgar has recently launched this skin-perfecting beauty supplement to help reverse the visible signs of ageing. The product contains a unique blend of patented BioCell collagen, hyaluronic acid and Vitamin C to help increase the skin’s natural collagen production – thus helping to plump up sagging skin and smooth away fine lines and wrinkles. It’s also been the subject of an intensive clinical trial to prove its efficacy. After four weeks of use, I noticed that the pesky fine lines under my eyes appeared much smoother when I would laugh. Yes. this is what I do in the mirror occasionally – don’t judge.

4. High Strength Olive Leaf Extract, Comvita

The mighty olive leaf has been celebrated for thousands of years due to its numerous health benefits and has even been mentioned in the Bible – “The fruit (of the olive tree) thereof shall be for meat, and the leaf thereof for medicine.” (Ezekiel 47.12). The olive leaf is said to improve the immune system, aid cardiovascular heath, increase energy levels, plump out lacklustre complexions and encourage healthy hair growth. Comvita’s High Strength Olive Leaf Extract (£24.98 for 60 capsules) is of optimum strength and also includes zinc and copper, which enhances the skin and hair beautifying qualities of the extract. After three weeks of use, my skin was glowing and my once dull head of hair was transformed into a glossy, bouncy mane worthy of being featured in the cheesiest shampoo ads.

5. Essential Female Multi, Viridian

These 100% vegan natural multivitamin capsules (£28.45 for 60 capsules) are especially formulated for women between the ages of 18 to 39 and contain a powerhouse of health and skin improving ingredients including cranberry fruit, Siberian Ginseng and hibiscus. Iron is also included to help reduce tiredness and fatigue, support normal cognitive function, boost the immune system and assist with the formation of red blood cells. Vitamin B6 helps regulate hormone activity, which plays a massive part in the health and appearance of the skin. I take these everyday for an overall feeling of wellbeing and healthy, glowing skin.

6. Bio-MSM + Silica Tablets, Pharma Nord

This Danish natural beauty supplement (£12.95 for 120 tablets) contains organically bound MSM and vegetable silica derived from horseshoe extract. Again, I’m not quite sure how this product works but it does. After taking it for over 6 weeks I noticed that my hair was growing more rapidly and my skin had a healthy glow, but the most noticeable difference was that my once pitifully soft and bendable nails suddenly became rock hard. Once I stopped taking this product, I was saddened to see that my nails went back to their previous sorry state, so I hastily bought another pack. An essential beauty must have this winter.

7. Omega 3 with Omega 6 Family Capsules, Equazen

These golden capsules of anti-ageing goodness (RRP £22.46 for 30 capsules) contain the purest quality fish oil, which is a rich source of omega 3 – essential for a healthy heart, stronger immune system, brilliant brain and clear, glowing skin which defies the pitiful ageing process. Fish oil helps slow down damage to skin cells, thus preventing the tell tale signs of ageing. Due to its potent anti-inflammatory effects, omega 3 also helps prevent and heal bothersome adult acne, so take these skin-friendly bad boys and kiss goodbye to that pimply mug.
